Preface

PUBLIC DECAY Volume Zero is a special production made for my typography III class in my final semester at Texas State University.

This is the culmation of all of my design and publication experiences. This publication is off putting based on content alone however this Is the natural progression of my work and queer experiences . While there is an oversaturation of opinion pieces that are diaristic in nature, this publication is an opportunity for my fwiends, gays, and cohort to voice their opinions and show work as a way to deviate from the rigid structure of the program. I chose a magazine because as a form it is a heavily edited and stylized program that involves many voices, and as a lot of my past work revolves around queer community, this is an opportunity to give more voices to my brothers and sisters.

As a trans woman I found a lot of that very same community through the internet; However, our community used to have a much more physical presence and so I began researching and learning about what happened to our spaces and culture.

During the AIDS epidemic there was such a defined and carved out space for queer people as they were so heavily demonized that is currently missing in todays presence which is both good and bad. And so I sought to explore the relationship between old and new to visualize the difference in space.

Typography

PUBLIC DECAY VOLUME 0

RAW Bold- OutOfTheDark Type Foundry
A San serif font that is loud and tall, it is very compact and sets well at lower leading, its a beautiful font to contrast the body text

Typeset at:
Pull quote/H2: 18pt/16 leading/ 97% word space

Public Decay Volume 0

NewEdge666 Regular - Charlotte Rohde
A san serif font with a tall x height, it has some funky geometry that the rounded version really pushes, however the regular text was chosen here to keep legibilty while giving it a more modern feel.

Reflection + Future Steps

Public Decay is a long term project for me which was not finished during my final semester, I want this to be a long running self published magazine that will continue to develop as I grow. I plan on finishing Volume 0 over the summer and plan to release a limit run for my contributors and friends. Public Decay is my proof of growth and my passion project, It is an opportunity to practice writing and curating a thematic publication. Ive continued to learn Indesign to push my work even farther.
