Known By Heart
Preface
This Reader is a collection of works from many wonderful artists and writers whom I am grateful to include into my work. This Reader encompasses a phenomenon that we all experience, love; It covers many different avenues, including perversion, fetishization, queer love, cruising culture, and the loss of queer communities and how it affects the culture. I began assembling this book after reading Will it Fit by Claire Star Finch in A Queer Year of Love Letters by Nat Pyper and it sparked my interest in love and the origin of the word pervert. I came to the conclusion that love is inherently perverse and from there it evolved into the relationship between love and perversion and how it used to demonize the queer community.

As a trans woman I found a lot of that very same community through the internet; However, our community used to have a much more physical presence and so I began researching and learning about what happened to our spaces and culture. The AIDS epidemic is something I would never wish upon others again, it was a mass tragedy that shook the community to the core. But there was such a defined and carved out space for queer people at the time that is currently missing in todays presence. And so I sought to explore the relationship between old and new to visualize the difference in space.

Process
Layout
I used a assymetrical grid layout with wide outside margins and a thicker top and bottom margin. I used a 12 column grid with a 0p8 pica gutter with a baseline grid of 13 picas.
I created the folio with the wider outer margin in mind, a vertically running folio that alternates between author and article between pages.

Reflection
Known By Heart was a fantastic exercise in developing an art object that informs the content, Traditionally I had understood that the content had informed the book however putting the form first was an interesting thought experiment. I started with a vague idea for content that took a long time to make cohesive however I achieved it in the end. Despite the time It took I set up proper systems to help me flow my content in efficiently and I have gained a substantial amount of Indesign experience through this project.
