Overview

Our team began this project by investigating AI data resources through the lens of data privacy law, with a particular focus on populations that may face disproportionate harm from biased, invasive, or opaque data practices. The research was developed as part of DesignXCultures in March 2026.

The project eventually evolved into DPUTX — the Data Privacy Union of Texas, a proposed advocacy organization intended to give the public a clearer way to participate in conversations around AI transparency, data use, and regulation.

A Vide Coded Mockup and a traditional Branding System

Designing a path from data awareness to collective action

AI is becoming part of everyday life, but many people have limited visibility into how their data is used, stored, or incorporated into AI systems.

Our team explored AI data privacy through the lens of at-risk demographics and asked:

How might we create greater transparency in the data systems used by AI to better protect people’s rights?

Primary Research

Do people actually feel in control of their data?

To complement our secondary research, we created a survey examining people's awareness of data privacy in relation to AI.

The survey received 57 responses, and the results exposed an interesting contradiction.

On one hand, AI was already deeply embedded in respondents' lives. On a 1–5 scale asking how much AI was part of daily life, 43 of 57 respondents selected 3 or higher, including 15 who selected 5.

At the same time, respondents reported remarkably little control over AI and their data. 48 of 57 respondents rated their level of control as either 1 or 2.

The Plan

Why: The AI industry is allowed almost unregulated access to data for AI and its implementation. There is almost no direct representation for the needs of the general public and this leads to exploitation of demographics that traditionally lack protection.

This group would have three goals in mind to start:

  1. Lobby the government to force AI companies to be transparent in their data systems.

  1. Lobby for the creation of regulation for AI data systems that would aim to eliminate biases.

  1. Lobby for AI regulation that limits what data corporations are allowed to use in their training models.

Logo Mark

Design

The identity uses bold typography, Texas-inspired imagery, high-contrast red and blue, and an editorial advocacy style to make complex policy topics feel direct and accessible.

The digital experience is designed around three actions:

Understand the issue → Know your rights → Take action

Reflection

Through DPUTX I learned the basics of design research and data collection, Design research in depth helps create efficient branding systems with through backgrounds. To fully flesh out the research we prompt engineered visuals to expand upon our research to give it form.
