Project Introduction

The Start of Our Process: Echo Chambers

The Impact Echo Chambers have on people (different generations).

  1. How might we analyze local and global trends to evaluate music diversity between communities through comparison.

  2. Streaming Service Data & The affects of the Algorithm on small/community based artists.exploring vibe coding to create an Interaction Experience(IX) application, we were tasked to use two API's to integrate in our self lead research project.

Tradefeed is a mobile-first bartering platform designed to help people exchange skills, services, and goods without money. Built for a generation navigating rising costs and unstable economies, the app reframes value as flexible, social, and community-driven. Instead of transactions, Tradefeed centers mutual benefit. Users offer what they can and request what they need, forming exchanges grounded in trust, communication, and
perceived fairness.

  2. Increasing Accessibility & Visibility of Live Music Within the San Marcos & Surrounding Communities.

  3. Intensives for Attendance, Collecting and Showcasing Attendance Data & Helping to Create Memories.

How might we examine the difference between how people interact with streamed music vs. live music to help engage local music communities.

Interviews

Interview 1: Local San Marcos/Austin Musician

Do you feel streaming music has increased or decreased the live music community audience?
Streaming allows more access and helps promote one's music. AI is increasing the want for people to go to live shows so they watch something real and engage with those around them. Prefers live, but has streaming/album to have a physical product to showcase.

What do you think stops people from coming to live music shows?

Not sure. Streaming is more accessible and more cost efficient, travel efficient, ect. Issues are time, money, and travel. People in the area do not make enough money (majority renters) to be able to spend continuous money on live shows.

What do you think will allow more people to come to live music shows?

Give intensives to those who come to shows. One artist gives out one cig. upon entry (one example he gave). The audience should/could be given something that allows them to further engage with the audience and the artist. One artist would pass around a disposable camera in the audience and ask for pictures of the audience and not of the artist. After each tour she would collect and post them. Selling your personality/art to others that allows them to engage and share with you. This should fall on the artist (engagement), but the venue should do a good job at promoting the venue while the artist will also be able promote their shows. The creatives of the world have a lot of power to create effects on engagement and expression within the community. "How can you get people engaged?"

Interview 2: Local San Marcos/Austin Musician

Do you feel streaming music has increased or decreased the live music community audience?
Decreased. Sees people watching/engaging with live music on streaming services and live streams. Doesn't replace the experience, but can be good enough access that it competes with time and money. The audience feels less pushed to have to go to live shows since they get a glimpse of the live show experience. The algorithm has ruined chances for aspiring musicians since upcoming artists popularity has increased drastically. Streaming is good for accessibility.

What do you think stops people from coming to live music shows?

Money and travel are the main issues Lack of variety in venue location and artist/genre variety may also decrease interest for a wider audience. Shows tend to focus on 1 or 2 artists.

What do you think will allow more people to come to live music shows?

Make it cheaper and easier to get to. More variety in location and artist showcase increases interest. More venues need to be spread out and not concentrated downtown. Earlier show options so people aren't getting back so late.

Solution and Interactions

Stamps

Digital Poster

COLLECT THE NIGHT is an intervention at live music venues, beginning with Tantra, designed to gather, visualize, and present live attendance data in real time. The digital component functions as an interactive data poster where attendees place a note onto a collective music sheet upon entering the venue.
Each note represents an individual attendee, while combined notes symbolize pairs or groups. Throughout the night, the composition grows into a live visual record of attendance and participation. A new music sheet is generated each day, creating an evolving archive of collective presence. At the end of the night, the completed sheet can be translated into sound, transforming audience participation into a shared musical composition.

Next Steps

This was my second major collaborative project in my program, I worked with five others, we had divided this project into two teams of three and I was responsible for UX design and animations. It was a learning curve balancing the teams workload with my own schedule however I learned better time management skills. I further deepened my skills with figma as a prototyping tool and I improved my animation qualities. This ended up being one of the first projects I was truely proud of because the fantastic job we did as a team!

This was my my second design research project and another group based one as well, this is an ongoing project that is still being worked on past the end of the semester. This project pushed us to continually ideate and evolve our research, through our work our project evolved and changed topics. This was difficult at first because we felt directionless but it taught me that research is meant to be as such.

We plan on continuing to develop our solutions to drive engagement within our community and track its results
